When A Stranger Sojourns In Your Land presents an installation of ceramic clay letters, roughly sculpted and glazed in muted tones, that moves across the gallery walls to spell a phrase from The Book Of Leviticus. The words admonish human beings to be welcoming to strangers and states that, “when a stranger sojourns in your land, you shall not do him/her wrong. The stranger who sojourns with us shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him/her as yourself.” This directive is thought to be seminal to observant human beings who follow the teachings of the Bible. If this one instruction is observed, no further insight on morality is necessary. In light of recent harsh rhetoric and hateful attitudes towards immigrants, documented/undocumented workers, and police shootings of unarmed citizens, Hartman has chosen to fill the gallery with just this one phrase, which moves from grey to gold and appears to be both fragile and immutable.
